The Pop Star studio is located in leafy Surrey, about 45 miles south west of London. There is on-site parking available for 4 or 5 cars. A bus stops 150 yards away at the end of the road, and although the railway station is a mile away, we will come and collect you. The facility comprises a well-lit control room of 185 square feet, and a live room of 125 square feet. The recording equipment comprises 24 tracks of digital audio on tape (ADAT) with a virtually unlimited number of tracks recordable to computer hard drives. There are 3 Apple Macintosh computers, the worldwide standard for audio computers, and 2 Pentium PCs, all running the latest audio software (MOTU Digital Performer V4 for Mac, and Cubase for PC). The computers are networked together, and connected via ADSL to the Internet. The network also has an A3 size colour inkjet printer, and an A4 colour laser, which makes for easy production of arrrangements, scores and lyrics. A recent addition makes on-body printing of CDs available too. Mixing duties are handled by a Tascam M3700. This is a 24 channel, 8-bus board, with automation of levels and mutes slaved to timecode. It has the facility to save and recall all mix moves, making the return to a previous project as painless as possible. Monitoring is handled by Soundcraft and JBL for nearfield, with two full Martin Audio stacks (18" bins and dual concentric mid/highs) available if you really want to FEEL the sound. The range of microphones held is not extensive, but with an Antares Microphone Modeller in the rack, any obstacle this might present is usually easily overcome. There are keyboards, including vintage items such as a Hammond Organ with high-powered Leslie speaker, Yamaha DX7 and genuine Rhodes pianos. There is a world-class Kurzweil sampling keyboard, together with modules from Alesis, Emu, Roland, Peavey and Yamaha. On occasion, some of the larger items are loaned to other studios, so please check availability if you think you might require their use. There are guitars from Fender, basses from Fender and Status, and acoustic guitars from Ovation and Eko complete the stringed inventory. There are several hardware effects units from Alesis, Behringer and Drawmer, and a magnificent Yamaha SPX1000 digital processor. The studio already has more than 15000 backing tracks and over 65,000 midifiles prepared and available for solo artists. The in-house programmer is also capable of preparing midifiles to your specification, either from recordings or scores. The studio can record CDs from the audio produced in-house or from any other recording medium. With a turntable, ZIP, JAZ and floppy drives, quarter-inch, DAT and Minidisc recorders already installed, most media can be handled. A recent addition to the studio is the facility to make DVDs from video tape. There are playback facilities for VHS, betamax and Hi-8. All in all, this is a very well equipped studio, and is available at very reasonable rates.
